It’s a real shame you’ll have to grit your teeth and endure these sequences when surely they could have been implemented in a more effective and less frustrating manner. Climax have created a game that evokes and expands upon much of what made the early Silent Hill games so great. It’s unsettling, has atmosphere in spades and has the ability to feel distinctly personal. Shattered Memories is a flawed gem, yes, but when the credits roll you’ll hopefully look back and remember it for the right reasons and not the wrong ones.
Original Silent Hill will be available for PlayStation Plus members this April for FREE!
"Konami also decided to add onto the recent batch of survival horror goodness by releasing Silent Hill, the PSone classic for free on the network as well."
Silent Hill makes CNN’s 10 biggest violent video-game controversies list
CNN has placed the first Silent Hill at #5 right after the first Grand Theft Auto as contributing to a law banning violent video games. Here is what CNN had to say:
(CNN) — This week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that a California law banning the sale of violent video games to kids went too far is just the latest in a long string of headline-grabbing moments in gaming history.
Unfortunately, at least as far as mainstream audiences are concerned, those headlines often center around violence in video games, particularly focusing on how that violence affects children.
To be sure, there’s plenty of content in video games that’s not for kids. Virtually everyone agrees on that, and there’s a ratings system in place to help parents decide which games are appropriate and which ones aren’t.
The ratings, like those at a movie theater, provide guidelines and create rules for game retailers. (California’s law would have judged games differently though, making it a crime if a retailer doesn’t follow them.)
But even the current ratings system was born out of controversy. And, as games get more graphic and complex, it hasn’t stemmed the tide of complaints about some titles.
When Konami released it in 1999, no one had seen anything quite like “Silent Hill.” A creepy survival shooter, it took horror-movie style visuals to a new level, complete with cut scenes that included disemboweled and crucified bodies.
Future installments in the series kept it up, using music, sound and visual advances to boost the creepiness factor.
For the original, a monster called “The Grey Child” — a small, naked creature encountered near a school — had to be redesigned before the game could be released in North America. The monster was eventually taken out of the European release altogether.
Q:So, I've been playing Silent Hill (1) again, and in the hospital, there's a mysterious crashing noise. When you go into one of the rooms through the secret door in the storeroom, there's a particular room where you hear it repeatedly.
What is that unexplained noise?

It’s the fear of the unknown that keeps our hairs on end.

Silent Hill Soundbox Contains Coveted ‘Lost Carol’ Track
The epic Silent Hill Soundbox has been given a full track listing on Konami’s store, and with the reveal comes an exciting discovery; the extremely coveted track ‘Lost Carol’ will be in the package. Fans have been trying to find the full version of ‘Lost Carol’ for years, some even going so far as ripping it from the game and trying to remove in-game dialog from it. When we interviewed Joe Romersa, he didn’t give us any leads either.
The Silent Hill Soundbox contains every track, and more from the entire Silent Hill series. Think of it as a farewell present from series composer Akira Yamaoka. If the steep price isn’t an obstacle, then consider yourself a proud owner of something great.
Q:How could you forget the mirrored room in Silent Hill 3 for scariest moments? I was by myself on a dark rain day when I went into that room in the hospital. I was so freaked out that I did continue playing for a few days, then I needed someone to help me through parts. There are times when I hear sounds that remind of Silent Hill and start freaking out. Something triggers in my mind, and I think it is actually happening to me. o.o
I didnt forget that at all I just have so many moments. The sounds Akira makes whether it be music or sound effects scared me as well especially in Silent Hill 1.
Interview With Thessaly Lerner (Lisa Garland)
I had the most amazing opportunity to interview the lovely wild and creative Thessaly Lerner, the voice actress for Lisa Garland in the original Silent Hill. Thessaly gave Silent Haven a few moments of her time to answer a few questions on her work with Silent Hill.
Silent Haven: What was your work prior to Silent Hill?
Thessaly Lerner: I have done hundreds of Leapfrog Toys products, probably prior to and after Silent Hill. After Silent Hill, I was cast as Teen Girl in The Sims 2 franchise. I’ve done hundreds of other VO’s - my vo-focused website with my demos and credits is: www.ThessalyLerner.com
Silent Haven: Have you followed the Silent Hill series since your work with the first game?
Thessaly Lerner: Haven’t followed Silent Hill, but discovered Konami used my voice without asking for SH 3 - my agent sued them & got a mini-settlement. Tiny, but something. I know SH is huge and peeps love it.
Silent Haven: Did you play the Silent Hill game after recording the voice for Lisa? If so what did you think?
Thessaly Lerner: Never played Silent Hill - have only seen clips on youtube.
Silent Haven: Has your work with silent hill been significantly different than your other work with the Sims or any of your other work?
Thessaly Lerner: SH is different in that is amazing how huge it got. It was a very low-paying VO job, no hype in the project; just another job to help pay the phone bill for a month. It’s remarkable how beloved it is. Sims was ongoing - 7 yrs. SH was a 1 time gig for 1 hr.
Silent Haven: Lisa had a very innocent, soft, sweet sound in her voice, was this a character that was hard to voice?
Thessaly Lerner: Character was a little hard to voice, as I have a pretty high voice & they wanted me low, which I am in the mornings, but not after I’ve warmed up. I think they pitched me down a note or two.
Silent Haven: If requested by Konami would you be apart of something Silent Hill again today?
Thessaly Lerner: I love to work, love doing voiceovers. I would love to do anything Konami requests. Please email me about any projects with a budget, no matter how large or small.
